Episode 8 – Walking the Little Way Together – St. Thérèse and Marie: The Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Fr. Timothy Gallagher continues his look at the lives of St. Thérèse of Lisieux and her cousin, Marie Guérin, who joined the Carmel as Sister Marie of the Eucharist in 1895.

St.Thérèse, as assistant novice mistress, lovingly guided Marie during her formative years in religious life. Through letters, poetry, and spiritual counsel, Thérèse helped Marie navigate struggles with scrupulosity and emotional exuberance, fostering a deeper understanding of virtue and selflessness. Thérèse’s guidance combined firmness, tenderness, and profound spiritual wisdom, reflecting her personal sanctity and commitment to the “Little Way.” Her letters and poems, such as “Jesus Alone” and “My Weapons,” offer a glimpse into her profound love for Jesus and her deep reliance on divine grace.

This includes the spiritual milestones during these last two years of her life, including her discovery of the “Little Way,” her act of offering herself to God’s merciful love, and her experience of spiritual darkness amidst her illness. Despite her physical suffering, Thérèse remained fully devoted to uplifting and forming her novices, including her cousin Celine, and fostering joy and unity in the community.

Episode 7 – The Poetry of Saint Thérèse – St. Thérèse and Marie: The Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Fr. Timothy Gallagher explores the poetic expressions of St. Thérèse of Lisieux and her profound ability to convey spiritual truths through poetry despite her young age, lack of formal training, and challenging circumstances.

St. Thérèse’s poetry, much of which was written between the ages of 21 and 24, often loses some of its beauty in translation. Her poems were not just literary creations but deeply personal and spiritual reflections meant to uplift, console, and inspire those around her, such as her cousin Marie on the day she entered Carmel. Thérèse’s works reflect her deep love for Christ and the Eucharist, her longing for heaven, and her ability to connect with others’ experiences, expressing sentiments that resonate deeply despite their simplicity.

Fr. Gallagher delves into specific examples of Thérèse’s poetry, such as a canticle she composed for Marie, setting it to a popular aria to highlight Marie’s beautiful soprano voice. He also reflects on Thérèse’s family dynamic and their shared longing for heaven as a reunion with God and with each other. Thérèse’s gestures, such as leaving a copy of her poem “Living on Love” adorned with flowers in Marie’s cell, illustrate her thoughtful love and understanding of others’ needs. Her unique perspective of life as a journey toward eternal rest with God is a perspective deeply rooted in her family’s spirituality and reflected in her writings and actions.

Through her poetry and life, Thérèse invites others to live with a similar heavenly perspective, finding purpose in sacrifices and hope in eternal reunion.

TM5 – Path of Grace and Weakness – St. Therese and Marie: The Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts Podcast

BA6 - "Refuse to Accept Discouragement" - Begin Again: The Spiritual Legacy of Ven. Bruno Lanteri with Fr. Timothy Gallagher

Episode 5 – Path of Grace and Weakness – St. Thérèse and Marie: The Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor explore the depth of spiritual encouragement on the correspondence between St. Thérèse of Lisieux and her cousin Marie during the summer of 1890; during a period when Marie was grappling with spiritual desolation and doubt.

At the heart of the letters is St. Thérèse’s response to Marie’s feelings of inadequacy, spiritual dryness, and failure in her attempts to live a fervent religious life. Thérèse reassures Marie, reminding her that human weakness is not a barrier to God’s love. Instead, it is through recognizing our nothingness that we can abandon ourselves to the infinite love and grace of Jesus. Thérèse likens Marie’s situation to a poor country girl being courted by a king, where the girl’s weakness is not a deterrent because the king (Christ) already knows and accepts it.

While Marie feels she is not seeing any fruit from her spiritual efforts, God still treasures these “little nothings” that console His heart. This also touches on sacrificial love, where Thérèse encourages Marie to give her heart fully to Jesus, reminding her of Christ’s own humility in becoming “poor” to love and unite with humanity, particularly in the Eucharist.

  4. Finding Consolation in Small Acts of Love
Am I aware that even my smallest efforts to love God and others bring joy to His heart, even when I don’t see immediate fruit?
  5. Uniting in Prayer through the Eucharist

  6. Fostering Joy and Lightheartedness Amidst Trials
Do I allow the joy of Christ to shine through me, even when I am burdened by personal struggles, to uplift those around me?

BA6 - "Refuse to Accept Discouragement" - Begin Again: The Spiritual Legacy of Ven. Bruno Lanteri with Fr. Timothy Gallagher

Episode 1 – Introduction – St. Thérèse and Marie: A Story of Two Cousins with Fr. Timothy Gallagher – Discerning Hearts Podcast

Fr. Timothy Gallagher and Kris McGregor begin a discussion on the often overlooked relationships that shaped the life and spirituality of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. Reflecting on the profound and enduring influence of Thérèse’s extended family, Fr. Gallagher takes a special focus on her cousin Marie Guérin, who was both a close friend and spiritual companion to Thérèse.

St. Thérèse of Lisieux

These familial bonds provided a strong foundation of faith and support, with the Guérin and Martin families deeply intertwined in both everyday life and spiritual formation. Marie Guérin, being Thérèse’s first cousin, shared a unique bond with her, spending much time together during their childhood and later entering the Carmel, where she became a novice under Thérèse’s guidance.

The spirituality within this extended family was significantly influenced by the teachings of St. Francis de Sales and St. Jane de Chantal; through the visitation tradition embodied by Thérèse’s aunt, Sister Marie-Dosithée. This spiritual legacy, combined with the close-knit relationships and mutual support among family members, played a crucial role in the development of Thérèse’s own spirituality, which is characterized by its simplicity and deep love.

Fr. Gallagher also touches on the remarkable influence of Isidore and Céline Guérin, Marie’s parents, who were instrumental in supporting the Martin family after the death of Thérèse’s mother, Zélie, and during the later years of Louis Martin’s declining health. Their example of faith and charity profoundly impacted their children, particularly Marie, who carried forward the spiritual legacy of her family into her religious life.
